This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 28th, a little later than some years, but still giving you plenty of time to think about decorating your home for the festivities.
Thanksgiving is all about creating a warm and friendly family home, filled with vibrant autumnal colours and seasonal cheer. Think plentiful fresh produce – pumpkins (there are still plenty left in the shops after Halloween), foliage, grasses, nuts and fruit.
Many of our clients are US expats living in London, so to make them feel at home at this special time of year, we like to offer some interior design ideas to help them create this cosy feeling.
When it comes to décor, Thanksgiving is a little more laid back than Christmas so a few simple but carefully chosen decorations and a beautifully laid table are usually enough to create the welcoming feel you’re after.
Here are a few of our ideas for decorating your home at Thanksgiving.
Make a pine cone wreath
Welcome your guests as soon as they reach your front door with a beautiful, rustic wreath. We love a simple and classic pine cone design – you can find some of these in the shops ready for Christmas or try making your own using one of the many DIY tutorials you can find online.
Perfect pumpkins
Pumpkins and squash – these are perhaps the most iconic and traditional decoration at Thanksgiving and one of the most popular for the holiday season. You could decorate your doorstep or even your hearth with a large pumpkin or perhaps choose several ‘mini’ pumpkins to add colour to your dining table.
Dressing the table at Thanksgiving
The dining table is without doubt the most important part of any Thanksgiving celebration. When it comes to colours, reds, oranges and yellows are definitely the way to go – vibrant autumnal colours that really brighten up your home despite the drab, grey clouds outside.
A beautiful table centrepiece
A seasonal centrepiece will transform any dining table. You could create a simple arrangement based around products such as pumpkins, oranges, apples and other fruits. Or pick foliage from your garden – autumn leaves, berries or pine cones. Perhaps fill some antique bottles or vases with fresh or faux flowers or even herbs.
Instead of a table cloth, use a colourful table runner in a vibrant orange or red. Perhaps dot some tealights along its length or maybe a string of twinkling fairy lights for a really magical feel.
Fabulous flowers
Choose seasonal arrangements of flowers in vibrant, autumn shades – vivid reds, oranges and yellows to brighten up the table. Smaller vases or even glasses or tumblers create a more casual, modern alternative to a traditional vase. Think dahlias, roses, fruits such as apples or pears and sprigs of autumn leaves. Or perhaps a simple sprig of berries or crab apples.
Create a candle wreath
Why not try making your own candle wreath for the table using pine cones, dried flowers, nuts and fruits?
Terrific tartan
Tartan (plaid) is another really popular choice for table accessories at Thanksgiving. So choose napkins and a table runner in this gorgeous design to create a bold, colourful theme for your table.
